There are currently plans for the Windermere Branch from Oxenholme to Windermere to be electrified as a part of the North West Electrification Project. The project would cost £16 Million and would be approved to go ahead if all of the long term business objectives could be achieved. If approved the project would be finished in 2016. This would stop the need for a Transpennine Express diesel train to operate on the area of line which will shortly be all electric trains. There are also plans for a Blackpool to Windermere service.
